How to Optimize Your LinkedIn Profile for Creative Roles

As a creative professional, your LinkedIn profile is one of the most powerful tools in your job search arsenal. It's the first place recruiters look when searching for top talent. It's your chance to make a great first impression—or not. Too often, LinkedIn profiles do not reflect the awesomeness of candidates.

In fact, I've seen too many LinkedIn profiles for talented creatives that make me want to pull my hair out. If you're not getting the attention you deserve from creative industry recruiters, it's time to get a frank assessment of your profile—and probably your portfolio—and make some changes.

A Creative LinkedIn Profile That ROCKS

Here's a hot tip from a top recruiter: if you want to get noticed by creative industry recruiters, put all your important information in the Content Info tab and include links to your portfolio, website, and anything else that showcases your skills and experience.

Don't make the mistake of burying your links in the ‘About’ section or in your description.

Newsflash: those don't hyperlink, folks! Recruiters are busy people and we don't have time to search for your information. Anyone looking to hire needs clickable links that are identifiable and easy to find.

Keva's hot tip: Put clickable links to your portfolio and website in the "Content Info" tab of your LinkedIn profile—and be sure to put in a title that will grab the attention of recruiters and hiring managers.

I've seen too many LinkedIn profiles where the "About" section is a wall of text with no clear call-to-action or focus on valueRecruiters don't want to read a novel about your life story and hiring managers want to know what you can do to help them reach their goals

When we're searching for new talent to fill a role, we want to see your best work and understand your business value. Help us sell you to hiring managers by including metrics, a business case for the work you've done, and links to a well-designed portfolio. 3 Keys to a Better LinkedIn Profile So, what can you do to make your LinkedIn profile irresistible to recruiters? It's simple: give it a makeover by following these three simple steps:

  1. Update your Content Info tab with all the juicy details and clickable links that will make recruiters swoon. Think of your Content Info tab as your digital business card. It's the first thing recruiters see when they land on your profile, so make sure it's eye-catching and informative. Include a summary of your skills and experience, along with links to your best work.

  2. Make sure your profile picture is professional and up-to-date. Avoid using a selfie or a picture from your last vacation. Invest in a high-quality headshot that shows you in your best light. This doesn't mean you need to be wearing a suit and tie or button-upped business look.

Your profile picture should reflect who you are and still look professional. Choose the setting carefully and think about the image you want to portray. You can be cool AND professional—
    trust me.

  3. Use industry keywords throughout your profile that match the types of jobs you are seeking. . Look at several relevant job descriptions to find common words that describe your skills and experience. The new AI tools can help find commonalities and discover places in your resume and profile where often-used keywords can be inserted.

Using keywords is the only way to get through the ATS software and show up in search results when recruiters are looking for candidates with your skills and experience.
